Learning Science & Math Skills with Olympic Sports

As the Olympics approach, families can integrate the excitement of sports with real academic skills in science, math, and language arts.

Young students can benefit from colorful diagrams of athletes engaged in sports. Activities include identifying the names of sports, sharing stories about sports characters, and practicing essential skills such as measuring diagrams with a ruler and protractor. Geometry workbooks featuring diagrams of over 40 sports are available from Schottenbauer Publishing.

Students of all ages can enjoy sport science graphs, learning about concepts from physics (force, motion/trajectory, velocity, acceleration, rotation) and biophysics (breathing, pulse, electrical activity of muscles, joint angles). Students working on language skills can practice integrating graphs into narratives and reports, including comparison and contrast of essential concepts. Examples of science concepts and mathematical functions can be found in 5,000+ sport science graphs available from Schottenbauer Publishing, collected into books on individual sports and topical anthologies.

The Science of Yoga, Pilates, & Ballet: New Volume of Graphs!

A new science book is now available from Schottenbauer Publishing, both in English and in German translation.

Stretch, Hold, Move, & Leap!  The Science of Yoga, Pilates, & Ballet: Volume 4
(German/Deutsch Title:  Dehnen, Halten, Bewegen & Springen!  Die Wissenschaft des Yoga, Pilates, & Ballett: Band 4)

Volume 4 features brightly colored graphs depicting a variety of complex moves from yoga, Pilates, and ballet. Examples include a yoga sun salutation, Pilates splits, backbend, and inverted bicycle, and a series of ballet leaps (Glissade, Sauté, Soubresaut, Pas Assemblé, Pas de Chat, Sissonne Fermée, Royale, Grand Jeté, and Cabriole). Graphs show x-y coordinates plotted against time for the positions of the hip, knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and/or head during exercises. For comparison data, the Appendix also contains graphs showing a ball flying through the air, falling, and bouncing on a carpet. These data can be used for lesson plans by teachers and parents.

Note: These biophysics data are samples from one individual and are not representative of the population.

New Sport Science Books: Graphs of Snow Sports & Fencing!

Two new sport science books are now available from Schottenbauer Publishing, both in English and in German translation.

The Science of Snow Sports: Volume 3
(German/Deutsch Title: Die Wissenschaft der Schneesport: Band 3)

The physics of snow skiing, snowboarding, sledding, and other winter Olympic events are explored in this series of books containing sport science graphs. Volume 3 focuses on the acceleration and altitude of a small round sled on a variety of ice-topped, snow-covered inclines. Most graphs contain data of the sled released freely. Comparison graphs include pushes laterally, uphill, and downhill, as well as turns, drops, lifts, and flips. Additional information is available at: SnowSportScience.Blogspot.com.

The Science of Fencing: Volume 2
(German/Deutsch Title: Die Wissenschaft des Fechtens: Band 2)

The sport of competitive Olympic fencing is an exciting and practical topic for practicing math and science skills, such as spatial orientation and coordinate transformation. Volume 2 includes graphs of the position and movement of both sword and fencer. The data in this volume are relevant to all types of fencing, including epee, foil, and sabre. Additional information is available at: ScienceofFencing.Blogspot.com.
